As you can see by our mission statement above, we really do have our hands full! But when it really comes right down to it, Free Geek Providence is this: People. People helping people get their hands and minds around technology. When you volunteer for Free Geek Providence, your valued time helps us help needy people get nerdy. Whether they be low-income families, our volunteers, schools or other non-profits, you are helping another person.

So why volunteer?

You have access to relatively new technology, lots of older somewhat outdated (but still fun to play with) technology, and the opportunity to make new friends in the geek community right here in Providence. Really, what more could you ask for?

We are looking for someone with a modest background in bookkeeping or account to help us keep track of our finances. This would require weekly or by weekly check ins but the bulk of the work could be done remotely. email me if you are interested.

The digital divide won’t close by itself. Filling in the gap between people with and without access to technology requires the know-how and drive of those like the members of the newly formed nonprofit, Free Geek Providence. Armed with a simple slogan borrowed from a Portland group, Free Geek Providence founder and native Nate Hutnak is setting out to “help the needy get nerdy.”
